Background of the Centre
Centre
for Research in Speech and Language Processing (CRSLP) was founded in
2000 by the Faculty of Arts. The objective of the centre is to foster
the collaborative multidisciplinary researches that have been conducted
for more than ten years within Chulalonkorn University at the Linguistic
Research Unit (LRU 1983-2000), Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Arts
in collaboration with the Digital Signal Processing Research Laboratory
(DSPRL), and the Digital System Research Laboratory (DSRL) of the Department
of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. The collaboration has
also extended to the area of Psycholinguistics with foreign institutes,
such as, Infant Research Centre, the University of New South Wales and
MARCS Auditory Laboratories, the University of Western Sydney, Australia. In 2001 the centre was granted by Chulalongkorn University under the CE Scheme (centre of excellence) to develop a very large scale Thai continuous speech and Thai text corpus. This basic research is a very important step towards the advancement of the studies in speech and language processing both from the human and the machine or computer aspects. The centre also gains more collaboration from members from the Acoustic Research Laboratory, Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and from the Department of Thai, Faculty of Arts.
